For Special Olympics medalist, Matt Pascoe, running is a breeze. Since bringing home both gold and silver medals from the Special Olympics National Games, the professional sprinter has now set his sights on something a little closer to home – The Sunday Mail Bridge to Brisbane.
Driven by a desire to help offer people with intellectual disability the vital support they need to build a fulfilling life and realise their dreams, we sat down with Matt to talk about why he is taking on the challenge of Bridge to Brisbane.
Of all the worthy causes to support, why have you chosen to support Endeavour Foundation?
Endeavour Foundation provide people with disability the opportunity to live their best, independent and fulfilling life.Personally, I have been in supported employment at Endeavour Foundation since 2015, working at the Geebung site three days a week.
What event are you participating in and who will you be running with?
I’m running the 10km with my sister, Kate.
Why did you choose Bridge to Brisbane?
I’ve run the 5km in the past, this year I’m challenging myself to complete the longer course. I usually run in my neighbourhood so it’s pretty exciting to be running through the middle of Brisbane with so many other locals!
Where is your favourite spot to go for a run in Brisbane?
My neighbourhood – when you’re up early it’s really peaceful.
If you could go for a run with one person (celebrity or not), who would it be and why?
Maybe I should say my sister (in case she’s reading this!) but honestly, it would be supermodel Rachel Hunter – sorry Kate!
Top tip for people training for The Sunday Mail Bridge to Brisbane?
Do plenty of stretching, drink lots of water, go hard, but if you don’t win, it doesn’t matter – it’s not the end of the world.
If you could get one message out to people, following your personal experiences, what would it be?
If you’re thinking about doing something but not sure you’ll make it; go out, give it a go – you’ll do it!
